Note | On 21 August 1810, the French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected Crown Prince of Sweden and Generalissimo of the Swedish Armed Forces. A new portrait depicting him as Crown Prince, was needed and a currier was speedily sent from Sweden to France with a Generals uniform and medals. The currier arrived in France in September the same year, whereupon Bernadotte sat for the popular court painter François Gérard. The painting was completed the following year.
