by: Site Admin | Note | Portrait of Edward Stanley, Earl of Derby. Black and red chalk, pen and brush and Indian ink on pink-primed paper, 28.3 × 19.8 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle. The drawing is in poor condition, rubbed to faintness in places and badly stained. Chalk in the collar and pen in the hat have been retouched by later hands, but Holbein's fine penwork still shows in the face (Parker, p. 50). Edward Stanley was Cupbearer to Anne Boleyn, a patron of Holbein. He was active in the suppression of the Northern Rebels, 1536–37.
