Text: DEVINE, JOHN BERNARD
John Bernard DeVine, (93) a life-long resident, distinguished attorney and community leader died peacefully in Ann Arbor on May 27, 2013. Known for his devotion to his family and his faith, John was the compass at the center of a large family of five children and 13 grandchildren. John met Margaret (Marnee) Burke, the love of his life, in Boston and they married in 1949. Together John and Marnee created a family that brought them lifelong joy and pride. Born in Ann Arbor on February 5, 1920 to Frank B. DeVine and Elizabeth (Doherty) DeVine, John grew up the fourth of five children. He attended St. Thomas the Apostle school and graduated from the University of Michigan with an A.B. in History having been elected President of the Intrafraternity Council. He was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity and the Druid Society. His life in Ann Arbor was full of passionate U of M friends and sports enthusiasts. Only the Tigers could compete with Michigan teams for his attention in the sports world. An avid athlete and outdoorsman himself, John starred at St. Thomas in basketball and football. From the first visit to Crystal Lake as a two year old to last summer at 92, John was in love with the water and woods of Northern Michigan. From sailing to skiing, to chopping wood, John was most at home in the breeze off the blue water lakes up north. He passed a love of water sports and tennis down to all of his children and grandchildren, and golfed in his teens and later years at Crystal Downs Country Club where he expanded his network of lifelong friends. John graduated from Columbia University officer training (NROTC) 9th in a class of 1400. Beginning as an Ensign in the US Navy in 1942, John served in the Pacific Theatre until the spring of 1946 achieving the rank of Lieutenant. His destroyer participated in the invasions of Saipan and Guam, the famous Marianas turkey shoot, as well as the Pelilou and Philippine Campaigns. Within two weeks of the August 9 atomic bombing, John's destroyer entered Nagasaki as part of the Kyushu POW Evacuation Task Force. Near the end of 1945, they were based at Tokyo and Sasebo as part of the occupation force. Deeply affected by the consequences of the war, he studied and read about it throughout his life.
