Text: The engagement of Sydney Maleia Kennedy Lawford to James Peter McKelvy has been announced by Miss Lawford's parents, Patricia Kennedy Lawford of New York and Peter Lawford of Los Angeles. Mr. McKelvy, who is known as Peter, is a son of Nancy Muniot of Oxford, Md., and William Sheldon McKelvy of Gloucester Point, Va.

The wedding is planned for September at the Kennedy family home in Hyannis Port, Mass.

Miss Lawford, a marketing and advertising assistant for the Patriot Bancorporation in Boston, graduated from the Foxcroft School and attended Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland, and the University of Miami. She also studied at the Tobe-Coburn School for Fashion Careers in New York. Mr. McKelvy, who graduated from the Taft School and Emerson College, is a newsroom editor for WNEV-TV in Boston.

Miss Lawford's father is the actor. Her mother is chairman of the National Committee for Literary Arts and a member of the board of Vivienne Beaumont Inc. at Lincoln Center and the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation. The future bride's maternal grandparents are Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy of Hyannis and Palm Beach, Fla., and the late Mr. Kennedy, who was Ambassador to the Court of St. James's and head of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Maritime Commission. Her paternal grandparents were the late Sir Sydney and Lady Lawford of London.

Mr. McKelvy's father, who is retired, was a member of the New York Stock Exchange and former principal stockholder in McKelvy & Company of Pittsburgh, which was founded by his grandfather, the late William McKinney McKelvy. His father was also chairman of Babbit Myers & Company in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
